Cuts to Research Funding Jeopardising Our Future

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) is deeply disappointed by the recent cuts to research funding announced in the Mid-Year Economic and Financial Outlook (MYEFO). The cuts amounting to over $100m come at a time when the government is attempting to revitalise Australia’s science and research priorities; focus on careers in STEM; and build a vibrant and modern manufacturing industry. None of these are possible without continued investment in research.

Instead of cutting funding to research, the government should be creating an environment where research is looked upon as an enabler; the government should be seeking to encourage further fundamental research and collaboration between academia and industry; providing more opportunity for research in rural and regional locations; and encouraging young researchers to continue finding solutions that contribute towards sustainability and economic prosperity for all Australians.

—Prof. Pall Thordarson, RACI President
