PhysChem24 brings together the Australian and New Zealand Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Community, showcasing the latest research with national speakers as well as industry exhibitors.
This conference will be held in conjunction with a symposium in honour of Prof. Noel Hush, Foundation Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Sydney. Prof. Hush was one of the most eminent chemists Australia has ever produced and influenced generations of Australian researchers over a career spanning 8 decades. The national Summer Schools in Theoretical Chemistry that he inspired had wide influence across both the Theoretical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry communities. His work as a student activist at The University of Sydney in campaigning for medical treatment for returning WW-II veterans, and his passion for advancing the (alas few) women that came under his influence will also be highlighted.
The Hush Symposium is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise Prof. Hush’s research and community activities, their ongoing impact and the diversity of inspired modern achievements. The symposium will capture his passion for students, modern advances of his theory developments, and modern experiments that rely on them.
This special event will take place on Thursday, 4th July 2024, at the University of Sydney.
The Division meetings of RACI Physical Chemistry and Chemical Education are planned for Monday, 1 July to Wednesday, 3 July 2024, immediately preceding this symposium.
Speakers Include
Dr Cathy Foley - Chief Scientist of Australia (public lecture)
Professor Debra Bernhardt - The University of Queensland
Dr Tom Oliver - University of Bristol
Professor Steven Boxer - Stanford University
Hush Symposium Highlights
Symposium: A series of enlightening and entertaining talks and discussions about developments in theoretical chemistry and their applications in experiments over the last 70 years and commemorating Professor Hush's contributions to the scientific community.
Public Lecture: An opportunity to focus on the teaching, scientific, industrial, and community challenges facing us now
Formal Dinner: An evening of camaraderie and reflection. As we embark on this journey to celebrate Professor Hush's profound impact on science and our community, we ask you to please save the date and distribute to your networks.
Abstract Information
There are 4 presentation types available:
-
Contributed talk (full length research talk)
-
Contributed talk — Hush Symposium
-
Hot topic talk (shorter research talk)
-
Poster
Abstracts are to be submitted by email and an abstract template is provided here. Please indicate in your email which presentation types you wish to be considered for. Note that contributed talks will also be considered for hot topics and hot topics also considered for posters. Please also indicate if you wish to be considered for a presentation slot during the Hush Symposium. We will request that Hush Symposium presentations spend some time (~5 mins) reflecting on the pivotal, historical scientific accomplishment that enabled the presenter’s work, followed by an original research presentation on the state-of-the-art (bonus points if it relates to Prof. Hush’s contribution).
