Welcome to our schools competitions and resources pages

The RACI is committed to providing activities and educational opportunities for the next generation of chemists in Australia, and throughout the world. Every year we organise a number of state-based and national events, competitions and activities that both assist teachers in explaining concepts and stimulate interest in science in students.

School Competitions and Initiatives

International Chemistry Quiz (formerly known as the ANCQ)

Don't miss your opportunity to join over 100,000 students from over 20 countries in this unique chemistry educational quiz.

Secondary school students (ages 12-18) can test their Chemistry knowledge and have fun at the same time, with the quiz providing teachers a helpful tool to gauge their student's understanding of the subject. The Quiz consists of 30 multiple choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes, either in paper format or online.

ORGANIC COMPOUND NOMENCLATURE

Purpose

The purpose of the document is to clarify the nomenclature of organic compounds in the context of the new Australian and state curriculums. In general, all curriculum nomenclature requirements are aligned with IUPAC requirements.

Structure

For each functional group, the following will be provided:
• Summary information
• Extra naming rules or conventions relevant to the functional groups
• Worked examples for naming molecules where required in any State or Territory
Selected reactions will be shown for some functional groups.

How to use this document

This document is intended for use by Australian chemistry teachers to clarify naming conventions for organic molecules. It may be used as supplementary material to support or extend students.
This document may also be useful for first year chemistry course convenors, to confirm the functional groups they would expect students to be familiar with.

Teacher Resources

The RACI is developing a free resource database for teachers to use as a teaching aid.
It has been divided into 4 topics, and includes latest news, research articles and demonstrations that both students and teachers alike will find beneficial for their chemistry knowledge and understanding.

We will be creating these resources in 2022, with the help of our Chemical Education Groups and partner organisations. So stay tuned!
