The RACI Western Australian Branch
Welcome to ... Welcome to the home page of the Western Australia Branch of The Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inc (RACI). The RACI was founded in January 1917 and is both the Australian qualifying body for professional chemists and a learned society promoting the science and practice of chemistry in all its branches. The Institute was granted a Royal Charter in 1932 and has almost ten thousand chemists in industry, government, universities and the teaching profession. The WA Branch is comprises of over 600 members and has active groups in the areas of Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Education, Health, Safety and Environment, Management and Career Development and Tertiary Students Group. These groups regularly organise seminars, laboratory visits and social functions to meet others and keep abreast of technical developments in their related fields of interest. . You can find out more about the current activities of the Branch by contacting one of the members of the Branch Committee. You can also keep up-to-date by reading the online version of the WA Branch Newsletter, which is produced monthly and emailed to all WA RACI members. What's New ... 2008 RACI Titration Stakes Dept of Applied Chemistry, (Building 305), Curtin University of Technology 5.00 - 8.00 pm on Tuesday 1st of July 2008 The competition is designed to encourage those students who enjoy Chemistry, particularly its practical side, to develop their skills and to reward those who attain a high level of proficiency. Every secondary school in the metropolitan area plus interested country schools have been invited to enter two teams consisting of three members each. If more than six students from a particular school are interested, it is suggested that a local competition be held to select the best team members. Titration Instructions 2008 Titration Invitation 2008 Titration Entry Form 2008 2008 BAYLISS YOUTH LECTURER ANNOUNCEMENT Dr Maria Kubik, Paintings Conservator, Art Gallery of Western Australia The Art of Science: Chemistry in the gallery. This lecture, which takes place in August, will address a real life application of science; the development of pigments as an offshoot of the chemical industry, how these age and deteriorate, and how they can be detected and identified. Finding the wrong pigment can even identify a fake! Basic conservation science principles are covered, including the use of surfactants, adhesives, thinking about material interactions, and preventing the destructive effects of the environment. Dr Maria Kubik is senior conservator at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Proving that white coats are not confined to the lab, Maria is involved with the acquisition, display and storage of paintings, analysis of materials, as well as more invasive restoration treatments when disaster strikes. Recent collaborative research projects have included building a hyperspectral imaging system at the Australian National University, and developing protocols for provenancing Aboriginal artefacts in the National Museum of Australia.
