The 2010 National Chemistry Quiz will be held on July 22nd 2010 The Quiz will be run at your school and would be supervised by school staff and co-ordinated by a school Quiz co-ordinator who would be nominated by the school. The Quiz can be run at any convenient time during 22nd July 2010 and our response from last year's Quiz indicated that both staff and students enjoyed their involvement. It will require a total time slot of 70-80 minutes. The Quiz will consist of 30 multiple choice questions and will run for 1 hour. The Quiz will run at two Junior Levels (Years 7 and 8, and Years 9 and 10) and at two Senior Levels (one paper for Year 11 and one paper for Year 12). The aims of the Quiz are clearly related to "Science for Everybody" which is a national aim for science education. This was one of the reasons for introducing a Junior Year 7 and 8 Quiz for the first time in 1989, and a separate Year 11 and 12 Senior paper in 1992. The 2009 Quiz was conducted in all Australian States and Territories, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Brunei, India and England. 17,442 at the Junior 7 and 8 level
43,935 at the Junior 9 and 10 level
36,645 at Year 11 level
22,393 at Year 12 level
Attracting 120,415 entries from 1,460 schools. Once again we will be inviting every secondary school in Australia to compete in the 2010 Quiz.
To quote Professor Curtis, Past President of the Australian Academy of Science: "supporting these challenging competitions for school students is a far-sighted initiative. It will improve the performance of the higher achiever while raising the interest of students generally in science education".
