| Professor Jim O'Donnell generously bequeathed the RACI with a sum of $25,000 to establish the, "Jim O'Donnell International Travel Awards". This amount has been increased by donations from individuals, organisations and companies. The guidelines for the Awards are: -
The Awards will be available to RACI members who are currently enrolled as graduate students to enable them to participate in a significant international conference overseas. -
Each awardee should be the presenter of one oral paper. -
The two awards will be valued at $1,500 each. Professor Jim O'Donnell, throughout his long and distinguished career at the University of Queensland, was a tireless advocate for linking young Australian chemists directly to international science. These awards go a long way to fulfilling his vision. Nominations for both rounds of the awards should reach the RACI National Office by 30th April and should consist of a curriculum vitae, including a statement of academic record, the abstract of the paper to be presented, and a short statement indicating to the selection committee how attending the conference will benefit the student's career. One award will be for a conference to be held between 1 January and 30 June, the other for a conference to be held between 1 July and 31 December. All applicants should arrange for their principal research supervisor to forward a reference to the National Office, 1/21 Vale Street, North Melbourne, Victoria 3051, prior to the closing date. It is recommended that nominations are submitted by email (awards@raci.org.au). Receipt by National Office of each nomination will be acknowledged. An expansion to the Jim O'Donnell Travel Awards has been generously funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry RSC Student Conference Travel Grant Scheme for Australian Students. The Royal Society of Chemistry Australian Group have recently allocated funds to encourage Australian students to attend conferences in the UK sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The scheme will be managed under auspices of the Jim O'Donnell Travel Grants as organised by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inc. Any student undertaking PhD studies at an Australian university and who wishes to present a paper at a RSC sponsored conference will be eligible to seek financial support from the RSC Australian Student Travel Scheme. Applications and conditions will be identical to the Jim O'Donnell Travel Grants that are advertised periodically in "Chemistry in Australia". Any student seeking additional information can contact Professor Alan M. Bond, School of Chemistry, Monash University, Clayton, Victoria 3800. Email: Alan.Bond@sci.monash.edu.au or apply at the time the Jim O'Donnell Travel Grants Schemes are advertised.
A significant number of members of the RACI are also members of the RSC. The RSC provides funds to promote Australia chemistry and links with the RSC in recognition of their members in this country. The RSC Australian group looks forward to supporting Australian students in the above mentioned manner in the coming years.
