Cornforth Medal

The Board of The Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inc. awards a bronze relief medal commemorating the work of Sir John Cornforth AC CBE FRS.

The Cornforth medal will be awarded annually to a financial RACI member for the most outstanding PhD thesis submitted in a branch of chemistry, chemical science or chemical technology in the previous thirteen months. The medal is designed to give recognition of outstanding achievement in chemistry and to promote chemical communication. The prize will be a bronze relief medal and a suitable cash award. The medal will bear the profile of Sir John Cornforth, and the words For a Thesis on Chemical Research.

Chemistry-related University Departments will be invited to nominate candidates through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) or equivalent for the award of the Cornforth Medal.

Conditions of the Award

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inc. will award one medal annually to a financial RACI member who is judged to have completed the most outstanding PhD thesis in a branch of chemistry, chemical science or chemical technology under the auspices of an Australian University and whose degree has been approved, but not necessarily conferred, in the previous 13 months. No candidate may be nominated more than once.

The Medal, commemorating the work of John Cornforth, will be known as the Cornforth Medal.

Only one medal may be awarded each year and there shall not be a dual award. If the committee considers that none of the theses submitted reach an appropriate standard, no award will be made.
