PACIFICHEM 2010 CALL FOR SYMPOSIUM PROPOSALS

Round 1 opens 1 Jan 2008, closes 15 April 2008.

The 2010 International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies, known as Pacifichem 2010, has issued its first call for symposia.

The Congress, scheduled to be held in Honolulu on Dec. 15-20 2010, is jointly sponsored by the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), American Chemical Society (ACS), Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ), New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, The Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inc., Korean Chemical Society, and Chinese Chemical Society.

The 2010 event will be the sixth in the series of successful scientific congresses of Pacific Basin chemical societies. Initiated in 1984, the congresses have been held in Honolulu approximately every five years since. Pacifichem 2010's stated goal is to promote collaborations among Pacific Basin chemical scientists that will improve the quality of life around the world. It is a very large chemical congress attracting 10-15,000 chemists and a similar number of papers. It is organized around several hundred symposia, suggested by chemists from the region on the basis that they represent current cutting edge and 'hot' topics in chemistry.

Symposia proposal submission will be done in two rounds. Round one opened on Jan. 1, 2008, and closes on April 15. Notification of acceptance will be sent to symposium organizers in the fall of 2008. There will be a second round in 2009. However, organizers suggest that it is best to submit proposals early as room for new symposia will decrease after the first round.

Proposals must be submitted by members of sponsoring or participating societies and must include co-organizers from at least 3 Pacific rim countries. The technical program will be organized into the following subject areas:

  • Core areas of chemistry: analytical; inorganic; macromolecular; organic; physical, theoretical and computational.
  • Multi- and cross-disciplinary areas of chemistry: agrochemistry, biological chemistry, environmental chemistry, and materials and nanotechnology.
  • Areas of challenge and opportunity: alternative energy technology, chemistry outreach, health and technology, and security.
Guidelines for submitting proposals and more information on the Congress can be found on the official Web site, http://www.pacifichem.org/.

Prof. Dave Winkler (dave.winkler@csiro.au) is the Australian and RACI representative on the Pacifichem planning committee.

THE PEARSON EDUCATION RACI CENTENARY OF FEDERATION CHEMISTRY EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Pearson Education Australia is Australia's leading publisher of educational resources. Pearson Education Australia have established this joint award with the RACI for academics whose primary activity is teaching in the chemistry discipline. This award is designed to encourage developing teachers, and is open to tutors, lecturers and senior lecturers (academic levels A, B and C) teaching in undergraduate or postgraduate University courses.

An expansion to the Jim O'Donnell Travel Awards has been generously funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry

New RSC Student Conference Travel Grant Scheme for Australian Students.

The Royal Society of Chemistry Australian Group have recently allocated funds to encourage Australian students to attend conferences in the UK sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The scheme will be managed under auspices of the Jim O'Donnell Travel Grants as organized by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. Any student undertaking PhD studies at an Australian university and who wishes to present a paper at a RSC sponsored conference will be eligible to seek financial support from the RSC Australian Student Travel Scheme. Applications and conditions will be identical to the Jim O'Donnell Travel Grants that are advertised periodically in Chemistry in Australia. Any student seeking additional information can contact Professor Alan M. Bond, School of Chemistry, Monash University, Clayton, Victoria 3800.

Email: Alan.Bond@sci.monash.edu.au or apply at the time the Jim O'Donnell Travel Grants Schemes are advertised.

A significant number of members of the RACI are also members of the RSC. The RSC provides funds to promote Australia chemistry and links with the RSC in recognition of their members in this country. The RSC Australian group looks forward supporting Australian students in the above mentioned manner in the coming years.
