The RACI Nyholm Youth Lecture Series 2013 - 12 Jun 2013
12 June - 13 August 2013, NSW
ENERGY FOR THE FUTURE
- Where can I plug in my car?
- Do we need more electrolyte energy drinks?
- Should I let my battery go totally flat before I charge it?
- Can my phone battery explode?
- How long does a pacemaker last?
- Can we fly a plane with batteries?
These and other questions will be addressed by Dr. Neeraj Sharma, the 2013 Nyholm Youth Lecturer, AINSE Research Fellow and lecturer at the University of New South Wales.
The fascinating history of the discovery of electricity as “animal electricity” will be outlined and the way to the future with more powerful lithium batteries will be explored. Think of wind and solar power – a storage device is needed to cope when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing – that device can be a battery.
This fascinating lecture by a well known science communicator will be relevant to many aspects of the HSC courses and to anyone who loves to know how things work. Parents and teachers are welcome too! You will be amazed by the demonstrations, role plays and eye-opening video snippets presented by Dr. Sharma. Ticket holders will receive a summary sheet on batteries.
This year's lecture will be $5. No cost to accompanying teachers and for Canberra Questacon. Bookings can be made by returning completed registration forms to the RACI NSW Branch Office.
