Some highlights of Dr Bevitt’s talk include:
* The Scintillation Counter – Using it to detect background cosmic radiation and distinguish alpha, beta and gamma radiation
* The Radioactive Cosmic Banana - where the radioactivity of a group of bananas, fertiliser and a rock is measured with some unexpected results
* Spotting a fake – Using radiation to distinguish between a genuine antique “Vaseline” glass vase and a look-a-like fake vase
* Mousetrap! – a video illustration of an uncontrolled nuclear reaction
Students and teachers interested in attending are assured they will not come out of this lecture glowing in the dark or endangering unborn babies!
A donation of $2 per student at the door is requested to cover costs.
