2011 Physical Chemistry Division Medal

The Division of Physical Chemistry invites nominations for the 2011 Physical Chemistry Division Medal. The Medal will be awarded by the Physical Chemistry Division in recognition of outstanding contributions by an individual to the field of Physical Chemistry in Australia.

Nominations may be made by the person seeking the award, or by any member (or members jointly) of the RACI. Nominations made by a third party must be accompanied by a signed acceptance of nomination by the candidate.

Nominations should be made in writing and include all supporting documentation appropriate under Rule 1 (see below), up to a limit of 20 pages. Four copies of all documents should be submitted to the Division Secretary:

Conditions of the Award

  • The RACI Physical Chemistry Division Medal shall be awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of Physical Chemistry in Australia. Contributions to any or all of: research, teaching, industry and service to the Division will be considered in making the award.
  • The recipient must be a member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
  • The Award shall consist of a Medal and free registration at the next Division Conference in November (BioPhysChem2011), where the recipient will be expected to deliver a Plenary Lecture.
  • The Selection Committee for the Award shall consist of the Division Chair, Secretary, two previous Chairs, and other such persons to be nominated by the Chair as required.

2011 Physical Chemistry Division Lectureship

Nominations are called for the 2011 RACI Physical Chemistry Division Lectureship

The Physical Chemistry Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inc. has established a funded Lectureship to allow outstanding early- and mid-career physical chemists to travel around Australia and present the results of their research work. The objective is to provide the Lecturer with the opportunity to achieve broader recognition of their career achievements to date.

The Lectureship will be awarded at the forthcoming Division Conference in December 2011 (BioPhysChem2011) and will be tenable for the period until the next Conference.

Nominations should be submitted to the Division Secretary, Prof. Michelle Coote by Monday 1st August, 2011. Electronic submissions only will be accepted and should be forwarded to mcoote@rsc.anu.edu.au

The conditions of the lectureship are:

  • There is no age limit.
  • Nominees must be within ten years of the award of their Ph.D. (or equivalent) and hold an academic, government or industrial position equivalent to at least academic Level B.
  • Nominees must be financial corporate members of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inc.
  • Nominees should not have been previously invited to present a plenary lecture at an RACI Physical Chemistry Divisional meeting.
  • Only in exceptional circumstances will individuals falling outside these bounds be considered.
  • Nominations should be made by two Corporate Members of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, Inc. Self nominations are not considered appropriate. Nominees are required to supply a detailed curriculum vita, including a list of publications and/or other evidence of research output, together with contact details of three referees. Nominees should also provide a title and abstract of the lecture that would be given if the application is successful.
  • Nominations should be submitted to the Secretary of the Physical Chemistry Division by the advertised closing date.

Requirement of the Lectureship:

  • The Lecturer will be expected to present a lecture in at least six state capitals and/or major regional centres during the year of the Lectureship. It is expected that the successful applicant will travel outside of their own state or territory in meeting this criterion. The RACI will pay reasonable travel expenses up to a maximum of $3,000. Host institutions are expected to meet local accommodation and subsistence costs.
  • In their application, nominees should provide a preliminary indication of institutions to be visited. The final lecture program will be developed in consultation with the Selection Committee, with final approval by the Chair of the Physical Chemistry Division.
  • A brief written report of the lecture series should be provided to the Division Chair within 3 months of the final lecture being delivered.
  • The Selection Committee for the Lectureship shall consist of the Division Chair (as Convenor), Secretary, two previous Chairs, and other such persons to be nominated by the Chair as required.
