About the Quiz

The ANCQ aims to promote chemistry in schools and provide a chemistry resource to teachers.

The quiz was first organised by Dr Peter Pomery in 1982, as one of the activities of National Chemistry Week. From 1985, the ANCQ was managed by Charles Fogliani, who introduced the quiz into countries such as Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Switzerland.

The ANCQ is divided into four levels- Junior Years 7 and 8, Junior Years 9 and 10, Senior Year 11 and Senior Year 12. Students only compete with others within their own state or territory (or country if the students are from overseas), due to differences in school curricula. The quiz has grown from 8,850 entries in 1982 to nearly 120,000 entries from 16 countries in 2011.

The quiz papers are compiled by Andrew Eaton (Wollondilly Anglican College), Martin Sormus (Illawarra Grammar School), Susan Margan (Carlingford High School) and David Miller (Toowoomba Grammar school).

2012 Quiz Information

The 2012 ANCQ was held on Thursday 26th July 2012, with 117,000 entries from over 1,500 schools. Entries were received from all of the states and territories in Australia and from 15 other countries.
