Biomolecular Chemistry Division

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inc., was founded in January 1917, and has several special interest divisions including the Division of Biomolecular Chemistry (formerly The Division of Medicinal and Agricultural Chemistry).

The division had as its patron the eminent Australian scientist Adrien Albert who was world renowned for his work in toxicology and chemistry. The division has named its most prestigious lectureship, The Adrien Albert Lecture after him.

The division has established reciprocal links with the Molecular Graphics and Modelling Society and has held two highly successful joint conferences.

The Biomolecular Division would like to congratulate two of our members for receiving the following awards:

Professor Margaret Brimble- Recipient of the Adrien Albert Award for 2011

This is the premier award of the Biomolecular Chemistry Division and is given for sustained, outstanding research in the field of medicinal or agricultural chemistry, related to biomolecular chemistry.

Prof. Brimble has demonstrated exceptional and sustained achievements in medicinal chemistry, including leading the development of a new drug candidate (NNZ2566) which is now in phase 2b human clinical trials for the treatment of traumatic brain injury.

Dr Paul Donnelly- Recipient of the Biota Award for 2011

The Biota Award winner for 2011 is Dr Paul Donnelly (Senior Lecturer, School of Chemistry, University of Melbourne), for his publication entitled “A copper radiopharmaceutical for diagnostic imaging of Alzheimer's disease: a bis(thiosemicarbazonato)copper(II) complex that binds to amyloid β plaques”, published in Chem Commun 2010, 46, 5437.

Dr Paul Donnelly has received the Biota Award for his research into new non invasive molecular agents to both assist in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease as well as guide emerging therapies. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to synaptic failure and neuronal death.
