March 1999

Welcome to the first newsletter for the Division of Chemical Education for 1999. We hope to produce occasional newsletters to keep you informed about the Division’s activities, conferences and events.

This newsletter has only been sent to committee members and delegates of the 1998 Chemical Education Conference and is therefore rather limited in readership. Please forward it to colleagues who are interested in chemical education but were unable to attend the conference.

Division of Chemical Education Webpage

Greg Klease and Kieran Lim have been busy developing the Division’s Webpage. The current address is http://www.deakin.edu.au/scitech/bcs/RACI_ChemEd/

We anticipate that the site will be linked to the RACI home page in the very near future. It contains useful information for all members as well as links to other sites. It also contains a listing of the Division’s Medal and Citation recipients obtained from (dated) Divisional records. If you would like to comment on the Webpage, or advise of any errors in entries, or omissions, please contact Greg Klease (g.klease@cqu.edu.au).

1998 National Conference

Seventy five delegates attended a successful Division of Chemical Education National Conference in Central Queensland in July of last year. The conference theme was Bridging the Gap and the plenary address was presented by Dr Joe Baker, OBE, Commissioner for the Environment, ACT.

Each day of the conference has a sub-theme and delegates obtained a good mix of plenary and keynote addresses, oral and poster presentations, workshops and industry tours.

1998 National Conference Proceedings

Proceedings of the above conference have been published and mailed to full delegates. The organising committee would like to thank the referees for their critical reviews of the manuscripts. Thanks also to the authors for submitting their papers and being so patient with the review and publications process. A limited number of additional copies of the Proceedings are available and if you wish to purchase a copy at cost ($20) please send a cheque payable to:

Do your bit for Chemical Education!

If you have any information that you consider would be of use or interest to chemical educators please send it to us so that it can be considered for inclusion in future newsletters.

The Division would like to act as a link between State/Territory Chemical Education Groups, enabling communication and dialog, hopefully resulting in a cross fertilisation of ideas and new initiatives. We would be pleased to receive information about your Group’s activities for sharing with other Groups.

Finally, if you have chemical education manuscripts for publication, why not consider Chemeda?

The editor Dr David Daniels, UNE, mailto:d.daniels@metz.une.edu.au

encourages the submission of articles about chemistry and its teaching at all levels of education. See the Division’s Webpage for more information.

We want to hear from you. Please email ideas that you wish to share.
