Professor Richard Alan Russell, AM, has been a major driving force in the Australian Chemistry Olympiad program for many years. He proactively and enthusiastically trained young chemistry students, many of whom went on to have careers in chemistry. He was instrumental in the successful bid to bring the International Chemistry Olympiad to Australia for the first time and he was appointed President of the 30th International Chemistry Olympiad in 1998.
Richard has also made outstanding contributions to the use of microscale laboratory methods and videoconferencing in university chemistry teaching, promoted chemistry as Youth Lecturer in seven Australian states and territories, and contributed to secondary and tertiary chemical education through service on advisory committees both within Australia and overseas.
Richard is the winner of CAUT grants, Faculty and University Awards for innovation and excellence in teaching, the Division of Chemical Educational Citation for significant contributions to chemical education, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Citation for contributions to the RACI, and the Prime Minister's Award for University Teaching (Science).
