Division Medallist: Brian Yates (2007)

The 2007 Divisional Medal has been awarded to Associate Professor Brian Yates.

Professor Yates was graduated with BSc (Hons) and GradDipEd from the University of Tasmania and PhD from the Australian National University. Brian is best known for his development and advocacy of computational chemistry, within the university chemistry curriculum, but he had also contributed to the development of the generic skills of undergraduate students. He has been the recipient of national competitive and University of Tasmania teaching and learning grants in both of these areas.

Brian is an outstanding teacher, including singing in his classes. He has been the recipient of six University of Tasmania awards for teaching excellence, and most recently an Australian Carrick National Award for teaching excellence in physical sciences. In addition, he has supervised several high school students under the CSIRO Student Research Scheme and has mentored junior teaching staff as they developed their own teaching skills.

Brian has contributed to the promotion of chemistry and chemical education by giving talks to schools and the general public, through organising and presenting teacher professional development sessions and co-organising the 2004 Divisional Conference. Through these activities, Brian has contributed to the education of primary and secondary school students, their teachers, university students and staff and the general public.

Dr Yates has been active in leadership roles in the RACI’s Tasmanian Branch, in the Division of Chemical Education, the Division of Physical Chemistry, the Division of Organic Chemistry, and in the Royal Society of Tasmania. This extensive service has included continuous and continuing service as a member of the Divisional Committee of over 14 years … and still counting!

Professor Yate’s sustained and continuing contributions to chemical education since the early 1990s but especially over the last ten years, make Brian a worthy recipient of the Divisional Medal.
