Role of the M&CD Group:
Management is primarily about how we handle 'change'. While advances in technology play an increasing role in the storing and processing of data within an organisation, only people can communicate.
We must remember the primary problems of managing technology are not technical, they are human.
Many initiatives such as re-engineering, restructuring, and consolidation, focus on cutting costs in order to becoming more profitable. However, the other part of the equation is revenue growth, and this is best achieved by focussing on human resources to serve existing customers better, and create new products and knowledge.
Genuine concern for people's feelings is often the most strategic way to manage change.
Many scientists face a time in their career when their management duties begin to exceed their scientific duties. In progressing from the laboratory into management, marketing or other specialist areas, some members may feel this transition moves them away from the RACI. There seems little information to help guide chemists from the role of a hands-on chemist responsible for projects to a leader and manager responsible for a group of scientists.
The M&CD Group provides a focal point from which to collect information about relevant issues that may be of interest to RACI WA, RACI nationally, or to the wider community.
However, the most visible activity of the Group is holding various events or functions that relate to management and career development. Many of these are technical in nature (lectures, workshops, seminars), but may also include social and networking events. Most RACI events in WA are organised and run by one or other of the Groups. The M&CD Group is continually defining its role in order to be effective.
