Women In Chemistry Group

About Women in Chemistry

Women IN Chemistry (WINC) is an informal group of women who are working, have worked or are hoping to work in areas related to chemistry.

We are affiliated as a sub-committee of the Victorian Branch of the RACI, although membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) is not required for participation in WINC activities.

There are no formalities attached to membership of the network. Current members range in age and experience through students at university, school teachers, technicians, senior women in university and industrial research to unemployed or retired women.

“Schoolies at the Synchrotron” - Careers in Chemistry
Presented by the Women in Chemistry group of the RACI

“Careers in Chemistry” is a careers education session for female students in Year 10 who are interested in studying Chemistry.   It aims to engage and inspire females in particular to think about a scientific career, and provide students with the information and tools to make an informed decision about choosing Chemistry at university.  A range of careers in the chemical sciences will be showcased from an academic career through to corporate science management in industry and patent law.  The students will also hear from a current undergraduate student in Chemistry, someone closer to their own age and experiences.  Students and teachers will have the opportunity to question each speaker immediately following their presentation and to mingle with the speakers during morning tea. This should be an inspirational and educational event for students encouraging more active engagement in their scientific studies.

The event will be held at the National Centre for Synchrotron Science at the Australian Synchrotron, providing the opportunity for students to see one of Australia’s most exciting scientific facilities, and the largest stand-alone piece of scientific infrastructure in the southern hemisphere. The Australian Synchrotron uses electricity to produce intense beams of light a million times brighter than the sun.  The beam is filtered and adjusted to travel into experimental workstations, where the light reveals the innermost, sub-microscopic secrets of materials under investigation, from human tissue to plants to metals and more.  Using experiments carried out at the Australian Synchrotron, researchers can invent new ways to tackle diseases, make plants more productive and metals more resilient.  A tour of the Synchrotron will be provided for up to 75 people (including teachers) and must be booked in advance.  Tours will run immediately before and after the event.

The event is being run by the Women in Chemistry Group of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI).  It will run from 10am – midday on Thursday 18th July (morning tea provided) and will cater for up to 180 students and 20 teachers.  Each school is therefore limited to a maximum of 9 student participants.  If you are booked in for the first tour of the Australian Synchrotron please arrive at 9am.  Otherwise please arrive at 9:45am prior to the first speaker at 10am.

9.15 a.m.                Tour of the Australian Synchrotron (Group 1)
10.00 a.m.              All students and teachers to meet in Auditorium for Speaker presentations
10:45 a.m.              Morning Tea
11:15 a.m.              Speaker presentations resume
